A varsity chenille letter single color was for the first time embroidered as an ‘H’ in old English, by the Harvard baseball team on gray flannel shirt, and later was also adopted by their football team. It is an award letter awarded in the United States by schools, colleges and universities to their students for consistent excellent performance in various activities, especially sports.

They originated in the form of Varsity letter-one color chenille/one color felt. They are awarded to the students participating in team games like baseball, American football etc., as also for individual sports like tennis and golf. Since then varsity letters have become a part of the educational culture in the United States.

Why Chenille Letter has become necessity?

Several researches have been conducted in the United States, regarding the birth and application of the concept of awarding varsity letters to the special achievers among the students of various schools and universities. The common opinion of most researchers is that the necessity for this type of an award letter and later its adoption all over the United States arose with the advent of organised sports, which made uniforms for the team members a necessity. That is when it became necessary to identify and differentiate between the players of different teams to avoid chaos.
